Windows Dialup Configuration

How to install and configure dial-up networking in Windows

There are two ways (at least) to install and configure dial-up networking in Windows on your computer for access to TaosNet/NewMex. If you are connecting to the Internet for the first time, the Internet Setup Wizard is the easiest. The second method, Create and Configure Dialer is more detailed and accesses the control panels and settings that are minimally taken care of by the Setup Wizard.

Internet Setup Wizard

Since Windows installations can vary greatly on different computers and manufacturers, the most reliable way to find and launch the Internet Setup Wizard is to run the Internet SetupWizard via your Start button. Click on Start, then Run, then type in inetwiz and click OK. This will find and execute the Internet Setup Wizard on your computer.

Several screens will appear as the wizard leads you through the basic setup. At some point, Windows may attempt to install needed drivers, so make sure you've got your installation disks or CD handy! Click Next after completing the info requested in each box. Also depending on your configuration, the order and some extra steps may be required.

1. Welcome - Click Next. If you are curious and want more information, click Help, but it is not necessary.

2. How to Connect - Click button Connect Using my phone line.

3. Phone Number - Type in the TaosNet phone number: 751-9590 or 758-0950, (Click here for more information on which phone number to use). Be sure to uncheck the box titled Dial using area code and country code, as it will be a local call.

4. Username & Password - Type in your username and password. Both need to be entered all lower-case, (if your email address is [email protected], then bob will be your username).

5. Connection Name - This will be the name for the connection, you can type in whatever you would like to call your connection here, we recommend "TaosNet".

6. Click Finish - You're Finished, Congratulations!

Other Information: - If your computer asks you if you would like to "setup an internet mail account now," we recommend choosing "no," It will be easier to setup your email account inside of your email program, rather then configure Microsoft Exchange. Please see the mail server information below.

Mail Servers - Configuring your email program to check mail. You will need to specify the following mail servers inside your email program. Both "Incoming," (or POP3 server) and "Outgoing," (SMTP Server) servers will be mail.newmex.com . An alternative to configuring and email program such as Outlook Express, will be for your to visit our webmail page at http://webmail.newmex.com , where you will be able to send and receive email.

TaosNet's Multiple Phone Numbers - TaosNet provides dialup service using two different access servers. These dial-up servers enable us to help you get a more stable connection and possibly better connect speeds. These servers have different manufacturers such that dialing 751-9590 connects x2 56K hardware and the 758-0950 connects to 56K flex hardware. Both adhere to the V.90 standard. Depending on your brand of modem and your phone line conditions, you may or may not see different performance levels between these two numbers. We recommend trying both of our dial-up servers, (751-9590 and 758-0950) to determine which server will connect better. Return to setup info

IP Address is automatically assigned by our access server.

#

DNS Server Address - These should be automatically assigned, however, to setup these DNS numbers manually, you will need to:

1) double click on your My Computer Icon
2) double click on Dialup Networking,
(or single click in windows 2000/ME)
3) click your right mouse button on "TaosNet"
4) choose Properties from the popup menu
5) click on the Server Types (Win98) or the Network tab (WinME)
6) click on TCP/IP Settings button
7) In this window you will see a name server section. Either check the button "Server assigned name server addresses" or check the button "specify name server addresses" and add the following:

Primary DNS: 65.112.216.3
Secondary DNS: 63.81.160.11
Optional DNS: 63.81.160.15

Once the Internet Wizard is setup properly, then double-clicking the Internet icon on your desktop should make a connection with TaosNet/NewMex and launch Internet Explorer. You will now find yourself at the default start page pre-configured in your browser. This can be changed by you. Browse away!!

Although double-clicking the Internet icon on your desktop should launch your dial-up networking, we have not found it to be 100% reliable. Also this feature does not work with 16-bit applications. For these programs, you must first tell Windows to dial and connect before you use them. Sometimes your browser will launch and fail to activate the dial up correctly. Then you may get an error message that it can not find your start page. We recommend that after you have completed the Setup Wizard that you open (double-click) the My Computer icon and then open the Dial-Up Networking folder. In this folder should be an icon for TaosNet that was just created with the Setup Wizard. Single-click this icon with your right mouse button and click on Create Shortcut. Then place the short cut on your desktop for easy access. When you want to connect to TaosNet just double-click this Shortcut to TaosNet and the dial-up networking will dial and connect to TaosNet. After you are connected, you can then run any programs which access the network: Internet Explorer, Netscape, email, ftp, telnet, etc.
